Lone Characters

Characters are canny and dangerous enough to fight alone if needed, and many excel at taking on entire enemy units single-handed. A character that hasn't joined a unit is simply treated as its own separate unit of the appropriate type for every rule -- moving, shooting, and fighting normally. We call such a model a lone character.

Shooting at Lone Characters

A lone character makes a tempting target, but picking one out amid the chaos of battle is harder than it looks -- if a lone character is hit by any shooting attack, a "Look Out, Sir!" roll can be attempted as long as a friendly unit of five or more rank-and-file models sharing the character's own troop type is within 3". Roll a D6: on a 4+, the hit transfers to that unit instead (the controlling player chooses which eligible unit, if more than one qualifies); otherwise it's resolved against the character as normal. Unlike the automatic version used in a combined unit, this version requires a roll, since it's much harder to warn a friend from a distance.

Diagram showing three lone characters: one of a different troop type with no protection, one too far from its unit, and one close enough and matching troop type to gain a 4+ Look Out, Sir!
1. This model has a different Troop Type than the unit, and therefore receives no protection from the unit. 2. This model is too far away to gain any benefit from being near the unit. 3. This model has the same Troop Type as the unit and is close enough to receive a 4+ "Look Out, Sir!" against missile attacks.
