WFB-X: A Continuation of Warhammer Fantasy Battles

This is a continuation of Mathias' 9.x game, branching from his February 2022 releases (warhammerarmiesproject.blogspot.com). Pick a chapter from the sidebar to get started, or continue reading to see everywhere we've deliberately gone our own way since:

Changes from the Base Game

A deliberate, tracked difference from that February 2022 baseline. Anything not listed here should still match Mathias' own rules as of that release.

Rules Construction

  • War Beasts → War Beasts given the Skirmisher rule (Wolves, Hounds, Etc).
  • Swiftstride → No longer an automatic Troop Type grant for Monstrous Infantry/Cavalry/Monstrous Cavalry/Monstrous Beast/Monster/Chariot. Now comes only from the Fast Cavalry and Skirmishers special rules themselves, or per unit.
  • Swiftstride - Modified to use Movement in the calculations :
    • When charging, a unit entirely made of Movement 7+ models with this rule rolls 3D6 and discards the lowest, adding the result to Movement; Movement 6 or lower rolls 2D6 added to Movement.
    • When fleeing or pursuing, Movement 7+ rolls 2D6, adding the result to Movement; and Movement 6, 5 or 4 rolls 2D6 discarding the lowest, adding the result to Movement. Has no effect on models with Movement lower than 4.
  • Ice Attacks / Lightning Attacks → both were missing the "but not to spells or magic weapon attacks" exclusion that Flaming Attacks/Poisoned Attacks already had.
  • Natural Flyer → New rule that, when given to a unit with a Fly Speed, allows them to use that Fly Speed for purpose of Fleeing (but not Pursuing). Applied to Units or Models with the following mounts, or when Flyer is solo: Warhawk, Great Eagle, Terradon.
  • Dodge's rule text was expanded to:
    • Dodge cannot be used against magical attacks that hit automatically (such as certain spells or special rules), nor against an attack from a model with Always Strikes First -- unless the Dodging model also has Always Strikes First. Dodge cannot be used at all if the model has Always Strikes Last, or against any other attack that is resolved before the model's own.
  • Initiative: Models that charge add +2 to their Initiative instead of +1.
  • Lance → New house rule (jousting): a Shield's Parry save may still be used on the turn the model charges with a Lance, waiving the normal "Parry cannot be used by mounted models" restriction for that one turn only.

The Following Rules were made Global (Shared across Armybooks):

  • Undead → Resurrecting Fallen Warriors was merged into Undead rule. Also expanded Tomb Kings to include missing text from Vampire Counts: "Similarly, if you do not have enough models of the appropriate type, place as many as you can – the rest are wasted."
  • Giant Special Attacks / Fall Over → global, canonical wording taken from Orcs and Goblins. Removed from Beastmen/Ogres/Orcs and Goblins/Warriors of Chaos' own private-or-redundant copies. Excludes Giants with unique versions (like Slave Giant)
  • Troll Vomit
  • Mammoth Attacks
  • Bloodroar
  • Swooping Strike → This means that Griffons (High Elves) get +1 Strength on their Charge, like the Bretonnian Hyppogryphs
  • Daemonic → Daemons of Chaos and Warriors of Chaos had quietly drifted apart on this one; merged back into one rule
  • Bloodrage → Now it's only Hatred. Bretonnia's Hippogryph version's price lowered from 30 to 15 (to match Manticore's), and added a new Option to gain Frenzy for 15 points. Originally, the cost was 30 pts and granted both Hatred and Frenzy.

Retired Rules

  • Elven Grace → Dodge has been modified to what Elven Grace was (See Dodge above), making Elven Grace redundant. Every former holder (Dark Elves/High Elves/Wood Elves) now gets a direct Dodge (6+) grant instead, except Wood Elves' Hero Characters: Waystalker and Shadowdancer, who get Dodge (5+). Dark Elves' Assassins already had their own, separately-granted Dodge (4+/5+) and are unaffected by this change.

Lore Changes

  • Fleshy Abundance (Lore of Nurgle) → Beastmen and Daemons of Chaos casters now also get the "already has Regeneration upgrades to +1 saves" clause Warriors of Chaos' own copy had.

New Units

  • Dragon Ogre Shaggoth Lord (Beastmen) → new Lord-tier choice from 6th edition. Same stats/equipment/options as the Rare Dragon Ogre Shaggoth except Leadership 9→10 and the addition of the Lightning Attacks special rule on its own attacks. 275 points.
  • Goblin Hewer (Dwarfs) → From the Slayer Army of 5th edition.

Unit Rule Additions

  • Warhawk Riders (Wood Elves) / Terradon Riders (Lizardmen) → both gained the Fire & Flee and Natural Flyer special rules.
  • Slayer Army (Dwarfs) → Allowed Daemon Slayer and Dragon Slayer models to be General, but doing so changes the composition of the army to that of a Slayer Army as per the Storm of Chaos Book. Slayer Special Character Ungrim Ironfist (Slayer King) also changes the composition to a Slayer Army.
  • Waystalkers (Wood Elves) / Shadowdancer (Wood Elves) → Replaced Dodge(6+) with Dodge(5+) to bring them on par with Eshin Characters and Dark Elf Assassins.

Other Armies

  • None of our groups play those smaller misc armies, so were not included in our lists. We apologize if that ostracizes you in some way, we just never dug into those armies and aren't comfortable making changes to armies we don't know well.
