Fire Throwers

A fire thrower -- whatever its exact design -- combines an airtight copper-lined barrel with a chamber of sticky alchemical sludge, usually a mix of sulphurous compounds, black powder, and combustible oils. Triggering it releases a burst of these chemicals, which ignite on contact with the air and incinerate anything caught in the blast. Unless stated otherwise, a fire thrower has the following profile:

Firing a Fire Thrower

Place the teardrop-shaped template with its narrow end touching the fire thrower's barrel and its wide end aimed at any enemy model or building in line of sight. Roll the artillery die and move the template directly forward that many inches -- that's where the flame lands, and it can overshoot a target entirely if the crew aim too high. If the fire thrower has a range value instead, place the narrow end anywhere within that range of the barrel.

Every model under the template is hit automatically -- a unit suffering any casualties this way must take a Panic test, even though Fire Throwers aren't physical attacks. A misfire means the weapon simply doesn't fire -- roll on the Black Powder War Machine Misfire chart to find out why.
