Bound Spells

Certain magic items -- rings and amulets especially -- and some troop types carry a "bound spell," a form of magic usable even by a model that isn't a Wizard, or one whose concentration has already broken. Carrying a bound spell doesn't make a model a Wizard; it just means they hold an item that can cast one.

Casting Bound Spells

A bound spell is cast exactly like an ordinary one, using dice from the power pool (even by a model that isn't a Wizard). Its required casting value is simply the bound spell's own power level. Casting a bound spell from a magic item (not an "innate" one) grants one free power die on top of whatever's committed from the pool, representing the power already stored within it -- at least one pool die must still be used, and no more than three dice total (including that free one) may ever be committed.

A bound spell never benefits from the caster's own casting bonuses. In exchange, failing to cast one doesn't break a Wizard's concentration -- using such an item is assumed to take nothing more than a single word of activation.

A bound spell is often tied to a spell from a magic Lore; where that spell has a boosted version, the bound spell always uses the easier, unboosted casting value. If the bound spell comes from a Lore with a lore attribute, successfully casting it still triggers that attribute -- targeting whoever is actually casting the bound spell, even where the lore attribute's own text would normally target "the Wizard."

Miscasts

What happens if a bound spell is Miscast depends on where it comes from. If it's held in a magic item, the item crumbles to dust and can't be used again this game -- don't roll on the Miscast table. If it's an innate ability, the model simply can't cast any more bound spells for the rest of the phase -- again, no roll on the Miscast table.

Dispelling Bound Spells

A bound spell is dispelled exactly like any other -- the dispelling Wizard simply needs to equal or beat its casting result.
