Dispel

If a spell was successfully cast, the opposing player has a chance to stop its effect by attempting to dispel it.

Choose Wizard

To attempt a dispel, the dispelling player nominates one of their Wizards -- unlike casting, a dispel has no range and never requires line of sight to either the caster or the target, so any Wizard anywhere on the battlefield is eligible. A Wizard that's fleeing or off the battlefield can't attempt to dispel. If the dispelling player has no eligible Wizard at all, their army may still attempt the dispel.

Choose Number of Dispel Dice

Once a Wizard is chosen, declare how many dispel dice they'll use -- at least one, but unlike casting there's no upper limit.

Dispel Value

The chosen dice are taken from the dispel pool and rolled, exactly as when casting, giving a dispel result. To succeed, that result must equal or beat the spell's own casting result -- meeting or beating it stops the spell taking effect; falling short means the dispel fails and the spell goes through.

Dispel Bonuses

As with casting, many things can add a bonus to a dispel attempt. The most common is the Wizard's own level: a Level 1 or 2 Wizard gets +1, a Level 3 or 4 Wizard gets +2, with further bonuses possible from magic items, special rules, units, or terrain -- capped, as with casting, at +5 in total from any combination of sources.

Not Enough Power

As with casting, a dispel attempt automatically fails if the natural total of the dice rolled is less than 3 -- a natural 1 or 2 is always a failure, no matter the Wizard's power or any bonus involved.

Broken Concentration

A natural dice total of 1 or 2 doesn't just fail the dispel -- it leaves the Wizard too preoccupied with their collapsing attempt to try dispelling again for the rest of the Magic phase. The army itself can still attempt a dispel regardless of a Wizard's earlier failures.

Ultimate Power

For every natural 6 rolled while dispelling, roll one additional free dispel die and add it to the total (a 6 on one of these bonus dice doesn't trigger further Ultimate Power dice). These extra dice aren't taken from the dispel pool.
